Thread: Starts fine, idles fine then dies.

Default Starts fine, idles fine then dies.

    Hey guys,

Been driving my m715 around with no problems whatsoever. In fact, the other day I was admiring how fast it starts up and how perfect its idle was.

Then, yesterday when I went to start it, it started fine and then abruptly died. Which sent me down the rabbit hole all day of adjusting idle and A/F and even swapping out the coil just to cover my bases.

Today I go out to try again and it starts and sets into a perfect high idle for about 15 seconds and then dies. I've been adjusting A/F to various effects but it's the same ol' story every time. Starts, idles perfectly fine for a few seconds and then sputters and stalls out. I can keep it alive if I open the throttle up but when I lift off it goes kaput.

I know next step is probably to just rebuild the carb but the one kit I found that seems to be what I need is out of stock, so that's unfortunate. In the meantime, is there anything else I should check? It's just so strange how it was 100% fine one day and the next is completely dead in the water, with no indication beforehand.

Check your fuel pump. It should fill a quart bottle in under 30 seconds.

Fuel pump, fuel line, fuel sock in the tank, etc. I would also check to see if a previous owner put a in-line fuel filter as well.
    Come and take it

PO put an electric fuel pump on the frame and it's been buzzing pretty loud- funny enough I've actually never had to deal w/ electric pumps before so I assumed that the noise was par for the course.

So hopefully it's just the rear fuel filter is clogged because then it's a $6 part that'll take me a minute to swap. Which is good because it's pouring rain today. Thanks for the advice, guys.

EDIT: Swapped fuel filter and it runs fine again. Kicking myself for screwing w/ the carb and swapping a perfectly fine ignition coil before handling something as simple as the rear filter, but got her running as good as she was before. Thanks so much for your input.

The postscript happy ending to the story is helpful. I can't even begin to recount how many threads that I have read on other sites where the solution to the issue is never posted. Good job.

Good job on finding the problem, I would inspect that old filter and see why it clogged, it may be time to pull and inspect the tank so it doesn't leave you stranded.
