Thread: What is this engine?

    Default What is this engine?

I have no idea what motor is on my 715. It is not the tornado. I have crawled all over it trying to find numbers or a make but I can't. It runs great and I am going to sell it, because I just got a complete p-pumped cummins motor, so I would like to know what engine it is to list it. Here are some pictures I thought some of the gurus here might have an idea.

    Looks like a 258 AMC 6.

It isn't a Ford becaue the early Ford 6 cylinders (200, 250) had the intake cast onto the head. The 300 had the exhaust on the passenger side if I remember correctly.

Chevy 6's all had a lifter access pan on the right hand side.

Its new enough that it had an EGR port on the intake below the carburetor. probably at least 78 or newer.

DANG, that was fast. Thanks. I knew someone would know what it is. Do you know what this engine plus the T-98 tranny with a pto might be worth? The engine runs great, and the tranny works great also, this has been a very trouble free engine and tranny.

258 AMC 6. Good strong reliable motors. Does it have a rochester, carter or weber carb?

yeah looks like a 258 to me as well, as far as what they are worth, i got a good used one out of a j truck for 125 bucks, the tranny might be worth about that much to the right buyer.

Yup. 258 I6 (aka 4.2L) AMC Jeep engine. Just like in my CJ. Great engine. Lousy carburetor (Carter BBD).

There is a conversion to a Ford Motorcraft 2bbl that makes them a million times better to drive.

The old 258 will last forever.
