16" tire on a 16.5" wheel
Post by marknessmonster on Oct 14, 2006, 7:23pm
I realize that a 16" tire is not designed for a 16.5" wheel, but is there enough flex to fit. The obvious question would then be; is this appropriate?

It is NOT possible to safely mount a 16 inch tire on a 16.5 rim and it is NOT possible to safely mount a 16.5 inch tire on a 16 inch rim.
DONT EVEN TRY IT!!!
In addition, the 16.5 rims, due to the bead design on them, are not at all as good as a 15 or 16 inch rim for keeping a tire on the rim, especially when aired down for off road.

Jon is correct on the 16.5" rim thing. When I let all the air out of my 16.5" tires (to put in balancing stuff), one of the tires actually lost the bead on the outside. It just flopped off, with no problem. The tire was in the air, of course. I grabbed the tire around the tread and pulled it outward as we re-aired it. Fortunately, it re-seated as easily as it un-seated.
I don't think I'll air them down very much.

The bead lip on a 16.5 tire has a different profile than the 16. The same is true for the rim design. It's like old design vs. new design. I don't believe that I would try to mount one on the other.

To be specific...the 15 and 16 inch rims have a straight bead and the 16.5 has one that is angled away...thus the poorer retention of the bead...

They print the warning on the 16 inch tires "do not mount on 16.5" cause there where some injuries while mounting. Wouldnt try that!

How about mounting a 16.1" tractor tire on a 16" wheel? I can get a set pretty cheap but I don't know where to get 16.1 wheels
