P/S pump overhaul

Anyone ever overhaul their pump? The kit is just 'O' rings, not the gears. The PN:351160, (it's a Gates power steering pump repair kit).

I did the o-ring kit on my pump a while ago. The kit is basically a way to stop leaks from the tank. A new pump will run you about $30.00. You then need the kit you have to make it all go back together.

I did the full overhaul with new vanes and whatnot. Only thing I left out was the shaft bushing since I wasn't sure if it needed to be burnished to use.
Pretty straight-forward tho I haven't done the conversion yet to know if I did any good.
If it's a Saginaw pump, there should be no gears in it.

Be careful getting the ham can off: it's uh.... pretty malleable metal. Other than that the O-ring deal is quick and easy. O-ring kit was 12 bucks at NAPA.
Chris, how much was the full kit, and would you say it was worth it vs. a $30 new pump??

I don't remember but in that perspective, probably not worth it.
However Frapguy's parts house rebuilt pump won't quit leaking for some reason. I did replace the O-ring at the pressure fitting but that only slowed it down a bit.

You guys are killing me! Ha,Ha. It's leaking somewhere around the pump to ham. I'm hoping the pump itself is still good. This kit was 18.00. a rebuilt pump is 65.00.

It's probably the big O-ring that seals it up. The pump is probably fine.

Your problem does sound like a simple o-ring fix.
I just called my NAPA guy. $38.00 with exhange. The core is only $10.00.

Having the ability to fix it vs. the time and the little money savings would not be worth it to me. Experience has taught me not to be stubborn or cheap. Time=money 65dollars minus 18 for the rebuild means you're saving 47 bucks and then it may not work anyway, and you then spend the 65 bucks on top of the 18 after all. This is what would/has happened to me too many times in the past. Just my 2 cents-err 47 bucks worth. Bill
