M715 Fire Truck
2nd post...
My brother and I recently purchased a 1968? (I'll make sure) M715 that has been a volunteer fire brush truck for the past 35+ years. I've lived 5 miles from it all my life.
Very little rust and was maintained OK.
We got it running with a rebuilt fuel pump from 'Then and Now' and a rebuilt carb, some new batteries and fresh gas and oil.
I've put the 10-1331 master cylinder on, and am working on the brake lines now.
We've changed all the fluids.
First hurdle.....while refilling the transmission, before the fluid got up to the fill plug, fluid came out quite rapidly at the back of the trans and was running down all over, but the crossmember is in the way so I can't see exactly where its coming from.
Also, on the crossmember, on the vertical part, there is a hole about middle way up closer to the driver side, and fluid was coming out of that area too. What is that hole for? Its visible when under the truck looking at the back of the trans crossmember.
The trans is supposed to be filled up to the fill plug, correct?
Thanks, and I look forward to getting it on the road.
This site has been super useful so far.

Look at page 10 here http://www.m715zone.com/vb/pages/man...rksacrobat.pdf It shows bolts that can loosen and dump oil from the transmission, if it is leaking before it is full I would guess this is the problem. Yes fill to the bottom of the fill hole/plug.

Thanks.
That area is real gunky and greasy. I'll clean and check.

Looks like you are well on the way to having a really nice road worthy truck. Brush trucks are climbing in value. With all the fire issues that seem to happen every summer now. Are you keeping it a brush truck or other have other plans? Looks like a fun project. Keep us posted.:)

Thanks
Gonna keep it as is....may even try to get the fire equipment functional. For sure getting the lights and siren working.
Its a 10hp briggs powering the pump and a 150? gallon tank
Focusing on the truck first.

Slowly moving forward...have a couple of questions:
1. I'm trying to put the air cleaner back on, and have a gasket on the carb, but the the lock screw fully tightens before the air cleaner is tight on the carb. Am I missing a piece?
2. can someone provide a pic of the back of the transmission crossmember? Like mentioned before, I've got gear oil coming out of the back of the trans and I think I'm missing a bolt or two? I need to see a pic of a stock setup.
thanks

Do you have the collar on the air cleaner all the way over the flange on the carb? It can be a little hard sometimes especially if someone tightened up the screw with the air cleaner off the carb or didn't have the air cleaner collar down on the carb all the way. The v in the air cleaner collar needs to be over the flange on the carb.

There are two bolts with a locking bar that hold the bracket to the transmission, I used teflon thread sealer on the bolts.
